Epicenter in Pakistan’s Dera Ghazi Khan Region
The epicenter of the earthquake was located near Karor in Pakistan’s Dera Ghazi Khan region, in southwestern Punjab. The quake originated 10 kilometers below the Earth’s surface, leading to significant tremors across a broad geographical area, including major Pakistani cities like Islamabad, Lahore, and Multan.
Widespread Tremors in North India
Residents in various parts of North India, including Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Jammu & Kashmir, experienced mild shaking. Many reported that household items, including ceiling fans and furniture, wobbled during the tremors. Videos circulated on social media showcased objects swaying in homes and offices, creating a wave of concern.
Second Quake in Two Weeks for Delhi-NCR
This marks the second time in just two weeks that Delhi-NCR has been hit by tremors. On August 29, a 5.7 magnitude earthquake originating from Afghanistan rattled the region, with the tremors being felt up to 255 kilometers deep below the Earth’s surface. Such repeated seismic activity has heightened concerns among residents.
Impact in Pakistan and Afghanistan
In Pakistan, the quake was strongly felt in cities like Islamabad, Lahore, Faisalabad, and Khanewal, among others. Despite the strong tremors, there were no immediate reports of casualties or significant property damage. Afghanistan also experienced the aftershocks, adding to the widespread nature of the seismic event.
Delhi’s Seismic Vulnerability: Zone IV
Delhi’s vulnerability to earthquakes is a growing concern, given its location in seismic Zone IV, an area prone to moderate to severe earthquakes due to its proximity to the Himalayas. India is divided into four seismic zones, with Zone V being the most active. Delhi’s position in Zone IV makes it one of the most earthquake-prone cities in the country.
