Tirupati Laddu Contains Beef And Pig Fat? Health Ministry Demands Answers

Beef fat and pig fat was reportedly found in Tirupati Laddus according to a lab report.
Jana Sena Party leader Pawan Kalyan was infuriated by the report that showed existence of beef tallow in Tirupati laddus and thus has demanded the formation of ‘Sanatana Dharma Rakshana Board’.

As for the Tirupati laddu controversy, the Union Health Minister JP Nadda has sought a report from the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu regarding the reports of mixed up ghee used in making sacred laddus having beef tallow, fish oil and lard. These allegations, leveled by the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), have created very strong political and religious controversy, and its millions of devotees are very worried.

A Lab Report Points to Contamination

Chandrababu Naidu, leader of the TDP, cited a forensic report from Gujarat that supposedly found traces of non-vegetarian ingredients in the ghee used for making Tirupati laddus during Jagan Mohan Reddy’s tenure as Chief Minister, as a chief of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP). This unsavory report emerged in July and stated that ghee samples had beef tallow pig lard and fish oil, which are banned in Hindu rituals. The conclusions have been followed by allegations of temple violation and a severe loss of spirituality.

BJP Says, “An Unforgivable Sin”

The TDP ally, the BJP, has taken the lead in the criticism by describing the act as one that is ‘unforgivable’. Even the BJP strangers to communalism, have insinuated that non Hindus in the newly formed board of the temple could have indulged in the act. A BJP MP from Kurnool district, Bhanu Prakash Reddy, has also claimed that the former YSRCP government was responsible for the same and urged for legal actions against them.

YSR Congress Says, “Heinous Allegations”

At the same time, the YSR Congress officials, including the Rajya Sabha MP, YV Subba Reddy, denied the allegations of beef tallow in Tirupati laddus as politically motivated and baseless. The former TTD Chairman Subba Reddy who has completed four years in office also echoed the same tone stating that it was ‘unimaginable’ for such adulteration. He also called Naidu some of the worst of the bad character whom he accused of attempting to tarnish the image of the Temple for political purposes in a desperate bid for power in states.

Pawan Kalyan’s Calls For “A National Board for Sanatana Dharma”

Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister and Jana Sena Party leader Pawan Kalyan was infuriated by the report that showed existence of beef tallow in Tirupati laddus and thus has demanded the formation of ‘Sanatana Dharma Rakshana Board’. Speaking about the observations made in the report, Kalyan didn’t hesitate in stating that the state needs to get serious about tackling the problem as the findings indicate only the tip of the iceberg. He called for the board to function on a national level, thereby demanding that all matters concerning the management of temples, religious freedom as well as the holiness of Sanatana Dharma is protected.

What Is Beef Tallow ?

The main subject of the dispute remains beef tallow; a product created by the process of rendering beef, which includes rump roast and ribs. This fat is commonly employed in many commercial products, it however is prohibited in Hindu temples because of dietary regulations. The existence of beef tallow in the Tirupati laddu is considered as a transgression against religious rules which is why this matter is most relevant in the Hindu religion.

Complaints Filed Over Non-Vegetarian Contamination

Supreme court lawyer Vineet Jindal recently lodged an official complaint against the former YSRCP government, TTD officials, and the ghee supplier of Tirupati laddus in response to increasing public anger. All this brings the focus of the legal battle to whether or not non-vegetarian ingredients were actually used in the sacred prasad as alleged by the TDP.

The Lab Report That Sparked the Row

TDP spokesperson Anam Venkata Ramana Reddy displayed the controversial lab report, which allegedly confirmed the use of beef tallow, lard, and fish oil in the ghee used in making of Tirupati laddu provided to the TTD. According to Reddy, the lab report’s “S value” (a measurement related to fat content) was only 19.7, further suggesting contamination. Despite the claims, neither the Andhra Pradesh government nor the TTD has officially verified the report.

Political and Religious Tensions Rise

This issue has not only aggravated political rivalry but also raised issue of religious authority and administration of temples. Whereas the TDP along with BJP are fully devoted in protesting over the alleged contamination, the YSR Congress is still disproving the allegations as politically motivated. Since, political influence and religious sentiment are found to be interrelated in Andhra Pradesh strongly, the issue could possibly affect the future management of the temple and upcoming elections also.

What’s Next for the Tirupati Laddu Controversy?

But the Tirupati laddu controversy is far from over now that the Health Ministry still has to wait for the detailed report from the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. It doesn’t matter whether the allegations are true or not the event has brought back questions regarding the sanctity of religious places, temple management, and the political leadership. Over the next few weeks, more events should be expected as politicians, clergy, and legal persons do not know how to deal with such explosive statements.
